Together, the figures suggest that evaluating Meta’s investment cycle requires tracking what happens to operating profitability alongside capital spending. The evidence does not identify all capex as compute, so the claim must remain narrower: high capital intensity now creates a measurable operating-results test that revenue growth by itself cannot settle.

Capital Intensity Meets Margin Compression

Meta Investor Relations placed three variables in the same disclosure: 28% year-over-year revenue growth, a 31% operating margin, and 2026 capex guidance of $130 billion–$145 billion. Those figures describe different parts of the business, but their interaction is the analytical point. Revenue of $60.801 billion shows substantial expansion, while operating income of $18.775 billion—down 8%—and the margin decline from 43% indicate that more sales did not translate into higher operating profit in the quarter. The Joint Test Is Operating Conversion

If investment supports growth that later produces stronger operating profit, the current margin compression may represent a temporary phase in a larger expansion. If revenue continues rising but margin and operating income remain under pressure, the investment cycle may be consuming economic capacity faster than the reported growth replenishes it. This does not require treating capex as a direct operating expense or claiming that every investment dollar is compute-related.
