The Guardian reported that the five-month trial scanned more than 130,000 faces in its first week and led to one live arrest. That volume and operational outcome indicate that the project is testing a combined system of technology, staff and procedures in real foot-traffic conditions, rather than simply demonstrating that the hardware works.

Scale turns safeguards into system capabilities

Police say images of people who do not match are pixelated in real time and are not retained, an attempt to build data minimization into the workflow. Yet live matching still depends on watchlist quality, confidence thresholds, officers’ handling of alerts and the treatment of people flagged by the system. Procurement may shift toward auditability

The strongest countercase is that overt notice, immediate image processing and strict watchlist limits could keep errors and misuse low, demonstrating that live use can remain bounded rather than inevitably becoming generalized surveillance.

Evidence to watch includes published totals for scans, verified matches and false alerts; independent reviews of deletion practices, watchlist access and appeal procedures; and whether the trial expands in geography, duration or procurement status. Rising error rates and governance complaints as volume grows would weaken the scaling case. Stable transparent metrics without scope expansion would strengthen its replicability.
