China Opens Review of Palo Alto Products
China has reportedly opened a cybersecurity review of Palo Alto Networks products sold in the country, moving the regulatory status beyond prior certification into a formal review process.
China’s internet regulator has reportedly opened a cybersecurity review of products sold in China by Palo Alto Networks. This does not mean the products have been banned or that flaws have been confirmed, but it moves some of the company’s security offerings from a prior certification backdrop into a formal regulatory process that may affect procurement and supply-chain decisions.
A review creates a new access status
The Information reported that the Cyberspace Administration of China opened a cybersecurity review of Palo Alto Networks products sold in China. China’s Cybersecurity Review Measures state that cybersecurity equipment is among the network products and services subject to review, and that purchases by critical information infrastructure operators must undergo review when they may affect national security. The regulatory status itself is now an added procurement variable.
Prior certification does not settle a review
A CAC countersignature record lists Palo Alto Networks Firewall PA-445, PA-460, PA-415, PA-450, and PA-410 products sold by Palo Alto Networks (Shanghai) Co., Ltd., all at version 11.0.2, with certificates valid from November 24, 2023 to November 24, 2025. Those records establish a verifiable certification baseline, but certification and cybersecurity review are separate procedures and one does not automatically determine the other.
The first transmission channel is procurement timing
The review regime is designed to protect critical-infrastructure supply-chain security and national security, so its immediate effect is more likely to be on how sensitive customers assess products, versions, and supply arrangements. The strongest countercase is that opening a review does not establish a ban, a confirmed vulnerability, or an adverse outcome. Even so, longer approvals and evaluation of alternatives could become practical friction for China operations.
What to watch next
Watch for official disclosure of the products, customer scope, review outcome, or remediation requirements, and for Palo Alto Networks disclosures about China orders, channels, or delivery. Formal restrictions, procurement changes, or similar reviews of additional security vendors would strengthen the case for tighter supply-chain access. A rapid review with no disposition would weaken the expected operating impact.
