Multiple reports say Demis Hassabis is moving to chairman and Alphabet chief scientist, Koray Kavukcuoglu will run Google DeepMind, and Jeff Dean is leaving to co-found Discovery Loop.

Demis Hassabis is moving away from day-to-day CEO duties to become Google DeepMind chairman and Alphabet chief scientist, while former DeepMind CTO Koray Kavukcuoglu takes over operations. Jeff Dean is also leaving Google to co-found Discovery Loop.

A founder-led organization moves to divided responsibilities

The change is more than a title adjustment: it reallocates authority inside Google’s frontier AI organization. When Google merged DeepMind and Google Brain in 2023, Hassabis became Google DeepMind CEO and led the combined effort on general AI systems. Axios reports that Hassabis will become chairman and Alphabet chief scientist, while Kavukcuoglu will serve as senior vice president reporting to Sundar Pichai. Research strategy, execution and talent networks are being separated

Kavukcuoglu was DeepMind’s CTO and had already been assigned to lead the organization’s science board at its formation, placing him at the intersection of research and engineering management. Moving Hassabis to a group-level science role may concentrate him on long-term technical priorities. Dean’s departure also removes a leader still involved in deployment: a May Google DeepMind article listed him as chief scientist across Google DeepMind and Google Research, and described AlphaEvolve as a regular infrastructure tool.

Discovery Loop turns talent mobility into a continuing partnership

Discovery Loop’s website lists Dean, Sanjay Ghemawat, Quoc Le and Oriol Vinyals as founders and describes an automated experimentation loop for machine-learning research and engineering. Axios reports that Google will invest in the company and provide cloud services. That suggests a continuing technical link rather than a clean separation. The strongest counterpoint is that Google DeepMind’s accessible About page still lists Hassabis as CEO, so the reported arrangement has not yet been fully reflected on an official public page.

Watch for updates to Google’s leadership pages, for Kavukcuoglu’s role in future Gemini or foundation-model announcements, and for public details on Discovery Loop’s financing, cloud relationship and first projects. Formal reporting lines, research-budget disclosures or changed model-release cadence would provide more direct evidence that the handoff has become an operational restructuring.
